He was a grandson of William Holl, an engraver of note, and the son of Francis Holl, A.R.A., another engraver, whose profession he originally intended to follow.
Holl gained the travelling studentship in 1868; the successful work was characteristic of the young painters mood, being The Lord gave, and the Lord bath taken away.
Holls better portraits, being of men of rare importance, attest the commanding position he occupied in the branch of art he so unflinchingly followed.

Frank Holl was the son of the late eminent engraver Francis Holl ARA., and was born on July 4 1845, at St James's terrace, Kentish-town.
Mr Holl, who was made an RA in 1884, did not live to realize two of the great objects of his ambition-to paint the portraits of some beautiful women, and to paint a great group of portraits in costume, such as the Bench of Judges.
One of Holl's daughters is recorded as saying that the nervous strain of working with such distinguished men, was a major contributor to her father's premature death.

Frank's father was frustrated by the fact that his work consisted of expressing other men's ideas and he told his son that he wanted to be an independent artist but had "been driven by a graving tool to earn his bread".
Holl, who was now a married man with a family to support, decided like Luke Fildes and Hubert von Herkomer to concentrate on portrait painting.

Frank Holl was born in Kentish Town, London, son of an engraver, Francis Holl, and received his earliest training from his father, before going to the RA Schools in 1860 and following the swift path to success outlined in the quote above.
He made his name painting the poor suffering, and as such was one of the leading members of the school of Social Realism, along with Hubert von Herkomer and Luke Fildes.
Later on, as he became more successful, Holl turned to portraiture, almost entirely of men, and he was considered one of the best portraitists of his time.
