Keaney played four sports at Bates College in Maine, graduating in 1911, then coached at high schools in New England until 1920, when he and his wife Winifred went to Rhode Island.
Keaney taught chemistry, coached five sports, and was athletic director; Winifred coached all the women's teams for thirteen years and was a physical education instructor.
Keaney never won a major championships, but his teams went to four National Invitation Tournaments and barely lost, 46-45, to the University of Kentucky in the 1947 NIT.

Keaney is responsible for turning a game of patterned plodding into 40 minutes of frenzied excitement while overflow crowds, delighted at the spectacle of racehorse basketball, howled their approval.
Keaney retired from active coaching in 1948 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960.
Keaney, who is a charter member of the University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame, passed away on Oct. 10, 1967, at the age of 81.

A fascinating multidimensional man who made an indelible mark as a college athlete, coach and chemistry professor, Frank William Keaney is best remembered as the creator of the "fast-break" in basketball, which he devised in the 1930s while the head coach at Rhode Island State College (now the University of Rhode Island).
During the 1930s and 40s, Keaney's teams, made up primarily of Rhode Islanders, were usually the highest-scoring, and also the most popular, in the country, delighting fans with their so-called "firehouse" style of wide-open play centered around the fast-break.
Keaney died on October 10, 1967 at the age of 81 and was laid to rest in Fernwood Cemetary just less than 200 yards away from the Institute for International Sport and the University of Rhode Island Campus.
