Layden was runnerup (to the Lakers' Jerry West) for The Sporting News NBA Executive of the Year award in 1994-95, a season in which the Jazz went 60-22.
Layden played collegiate basketball for St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year letterman and captained the team in his senior year of 1979-80.
He is the son of Frank Layden, one of the game's most colorful figures whose eight-year career as Jazz coach was highlighted with the 1983-84 NBA Coach of the Year award.
