The Longbottoms Trial - The Sugar Quill
Frank Longbottom was probably either in charge of, or very senior in, the search.
I didn't mean that the Aurors would have tortured the Longbottoms, I meant were the four people on trial that day actually guilty of torturing them, or were the Aurors so 'over-eager' to catch someone because of public outrage that this could happen after Voldemort was supposedly defeated.
I think the Longbottom story is very intriguing precisely because JKR has laid very fertile ground here for exploring the blurring of the lines between good and evil - the shady Aurors that Sirius spoke about, Crouch Jr and his motivations, Crouch Sr and his method of prosecuting, 'guilty until proven innocent', and so on.

Frank was now practically *wrapped* around Snape, their faces mere inches apart.
Since his arms were otherwise occupied with keeping Longbottom from toppling over on him -- which meant he couldn't get at his wand -- he settled for the next best thing, even though it wasn't the most agreeable.
