Karl murders Dixon with a gardening tool and, upon discovering that she was not a victim but a willing participant, also murders his mother.
Karl later admits to Frank that his father, on one occasion, gave him a towel with a fetus wrapped inside and told him to bury it in the back yard.
In something of a farewell discourse, Karl asks Vaughan to take care of Linda and Frank and visits the boy for the final time, promising him "You will be happy." Karl returns to the shop, locates a lawn mower blade and sharpens it.

The series was based on the 'Hardy Boys' books by Franklin W. Dixon, although was largely updated for the 1970s.

Journal of the Hardy Boys Literary Society: December 2004
Critical attention to the evidence at hand reveals that the Hardy men are not necessarily the super-sleuths which Franklin W. Dixon would have us believe.
Frank and Joe “were so amazed at hearing Peterson’s request that they momentarily forgot about their photographing mission and near crash.” Foolishly leaving their camera and film in the plane, in a hangar where they knew enemies were lurking, the Hardys lost their evidence and subsequently wasted valuable sleuthing time seeking to recover the evidence.
With these ideas in mind, the Hardy boys reader is sure to have a richer experience as he continues to explore the adventures of Frank and Joe and their striving to snuff out the actions of the characters involved in the life of crime.
