He was born in Geneva, the tenth and last child of Charles Martin, a pastor.

The more one hears Martin's music, the more one is impressed by his ability to absorb existing styles entirely unself consciously, while stamping upon them a personal hallmark.

Martin loved the theater & composed a total of 12 major scores for it; yet aside from the Christmas oratorio "Mystere de la Nativite" & a set of concert excerpts from his setting of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" (in German, as "Der Sturm"), there's been only a tantalizing series of titles on a work list.
This recording of Martin's last big stage work, a setting of Moliere's comedy "Monsieur de Pourceaugnac" (1960-62) is doubly welcome: it brings a new work into the catalogue & also makes available a historic performance (1963) conducted by the composer & featuring most of the original cast.
The other factor is that, as Martin noted, everyone in the play is either a liar or a fool.

(Sebastian Benda had previously recorded the Ballade under Martin, as had Badura-Skoda "his" Concerto.) Both pianists are in top form, orchestra and conducting very good, and I find the shape of the 1st Concerto more convincing there than on Antonioli's recording.
A further consideration is that Benda and Badura-Skoda team up to play the first recording of the moody "Danse de la Peur" (Dance of Fear), an arrangement for 2 pianos and small orchestra of music from an unfinished ballet of the mid-1930s (premiered by Martin's friends Dinu and Margherita Lipatti).

When Lockrem Johnson, Seattle composer, pianist, and teacher, died in March 1977, he was remembered by his friends, colleagues, and students as a man of quick wit and personal warmth, given to versatile expression both in music and in animated discourse.

In the late 40's, Johnson was a Seattle Symphony pianist under Manuel Rosenthal and Eugene Linden, music director of the Eleanor King Dance Company (for whom he wrote the ballet She), and a member of the University of Washington faculty.
