McAvennie, 40, from Low Fell, Gateshead, was also ordered to pay £150 costs after admitting at Newcastle Crown Court to possessing £30 worth of the class A drug.
The court heard McAvennie was arrested in March this year in Newcastle in connection with a £110,000 drugs conspiracy.
Last month McAvennie was cleared by a jury of conspiring to supply amphetamines and ecstasy after a nine-day trial.

The former Scottish international footballer Frank McAvennie was cleared yesterday of conspiring to deal in drugs worth £110,000.
Newcastle crown court had heard that in March McAvennie, 40, was seen by undercover national crime squad detectives in a car with a friend and an acquaintance travelling to a house in Newcastle upon Tyne, where the friend picked up the drugs.
McAvennie, of Gateshead, had pleaded not guilty to conspiring to supply amphetamines and to conspiring to supply ecstasy.
