Frank Stack Original Art: Self Promotional Ad (1979) - Frank Stack - Foolbert Sturgeon Original Comic Art   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The "serious" side of Professor Stack was embodied in a book called Frank Stack: Etchings and Lithographs, published by Second Wind Publications.
This original art is warranted to be from the artist's personal collection (Stack is exclusively represented by this agency).
This page is evidently something Stack personally liked and had on his drawing board and/or bulletin board for quite a while, because there are seven thumb-tack holes at the top center (well outside the matted image area).

 Illumination | Spring 2004
Frank Stack is credited with inventing "underground comix" -- the now celebrated precursors to today's graphic novels -- back in 1962.
Stack's Adventures of Jesus revolutionized the comic book genre, inspired hipsters and hippies around the world, and turned the native of rural Texas into a 1960s-era icon.
Even while drawing his famous comics, Stack continued his fine arts training, first at the Art Institute of Chicago, then at the graduate art program at the University of Wyoming and, finally, at the Académie Grande Chaumière of Paris.

Stack did a series of hilarious stories about a befuddled Jesus Christ returning to the modern world, including a previous issue devoted entirely to Jesus Meets the Armed Forces.
If Stack's cynical view of higher education sounds like an insider's perspective, it is. Stack, for many years was a Professor of Fine Art at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
In his early years, prior to tenure, Stack was certain he would be fired if his academic superiors discovered his underground comix side-career.

Frank Capra: A Bibliography of Materials in the UC Berkeley Libraries
Frank Capra's films contain strong elements of theological optimism, the most clear example of which is 'It's a Wonderful Life.' This film examines intersections between God and culture, the presence of glory in ordinary events, and the powerlessness of people that causes them to seek God.
Director Frank Capra's films embrace 'the triumph of the little man over the system.' He won three best-director Oscars in a four-year stretch in the 1930's, but his work is sometimes criticized as overly sentimental.
Frank Capra's movies of the early 1930's, in particular The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933) and It Happened One Night (1934), played a significant role in the film education movement of that era, which was directed at high school students.

Though Stack is thanked profusely in Our Cancer Year, in Berman and Pulcini's screenplay (which draws heavily from the book) he has been rechristened "Fred" and turned into a youthful illustrator who appears to be in a troubled marriage (or at least saddled with an unreliable wife).
But Frank Stack wasn't just another of Harvey's gifted collaborators; he was a man who took a sabbatical and "chained myself to the drawing table for eight months," drawing at the rate of a page a day.
Having absorbed the lessons of some of the best writers you've never heard of, he weds the seemingly straightforward, confessional style to a plethora of framing devices and asides, all so natural one is never disrupted from the spell of the story, the pull of his voice.
