Stapleton was a subtle, intelligent player, held in esteem by many for his strategic thinking and accurate passing on the pitch.
Stapleton went on to move to Man United in 1981 for £900,000 (a fee set by tribunal after the two clubs could not agree).

Former Republic of Ireland international, Frank Stapleton, today said that he has been approached by Bryan Hamilton in relation to the vacant Republic of Ireland manager's position.
The former Arsenal and Manchester United striker said he was contacted by Hamilton, who was recruited by the FAI as an advisor on the appointment of a new manager, and is hoping to hear later this month whether he has made it through to the next round of interviews.
Stapleton's was manager at Bradford between December 1991 and May 1994 while he also had a brief spell with the New England Revolution in the US in 1996.
