Thomas has yet to find that late career adjustment, and its the late career adjustment which could add several respectable years to his playing time.
Thomas was very durable at 1b for a long time, even if he never actually fielded the position very well; his durability allowed the White Sox to use the DH slot to allow other players to contribute, get a rest, etc.
Thomas is similar -- he can play the field, he's just not very good at it, and they've got another 1b now, Konerko, that fields better (when he hits, anyway), so why not use the DH since you have it and get both bats in the lineup?
