Thomas, born in Santa Monica, graduated from Stanford University, where he majored in art, drew cartoons for the school newspaper and met classmate Johnston, forming a lifelong friendship.
Thomas and Johnston both retired in 1978 and went on to author several influential books on animation, including Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life and The Disney Villain.

Frank Thomas, who died on Wednesday aged 92, was a leading animator with Walt Disney, and one of the "Nine Old Men" who shaped the style of the studio's feature films from Snow White on.
He was a directing animator on many of the pictures which created Disney's style: he devised, supervised and directed the look of the title character in Pinocchio, which in 1940 consolidated Disney's reputation for pre-eminence in the animated field.

When I was in animation school in Milan, the first and best images I tried to “emulate” was the ones by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston and I must say that the first book I bought as a student was the incredible Illusion of Life.
I had the pleasure and honor to meet Frank Thomas in an Italian comics and cartoons meeting in Lucca, in 1992.
Frank’s greatest monuments are his wonderful performances—so many of my favorite moments in the Disney features are his, such as Pinocchio singing I Got No Strings, Bambi skating on the ice, Baloo the bear trying to explain things to Mowgli, and Captain Hook fooling Tinker Bell.
