Iona (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Iona is the name of a Christian progressive (or cprog) Celtic/pop/rock band from the United Kingdom, which was formed in the late 1980s by lead vocalist Joanne Hogg and multi-instrumentalists David Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge.
The album was loosely based on the legendary voyage of St.
Terl Bryant departed the band between these two albums, and Frank Van Essen returned to fill the vacant spot, playing drums as well as violin, which could be heard on the band's 2000 album, Open Sky.

Frank was born in 1967 and was brought up with music, both his parents being professional musicians, and with a brother studying violin at the conservatoire of music.
Frank met Dave Bainbridge in 1989 while touring Adrian Snell's "The Passion" and was asked to join Iona in 1990.
Frank had joined a well known Dutch worship band (the Ronduit -unpronounceable for the English, I know!- Praise Band) in the meantime as drummer, violin player and singer, and was soon asked to start writing songs and arranging for the band, something he really enjoyed and perfected in the years to follow.

Van Essen's crescendo drumming sets the pace in a tapestry of rhythms while Troy Donockleys pipes sit moodily on top.
The instrumental pastiche, "Castlerigg", starts with the haunting tones of pipes and builds up to include drums, stacking layer upon layer of rhythm and sound when suddenly, all we are left with Van Essen's trembling violin and Joanne's breathy vocals, before pipes and drums kick in again and lead us into a lively Celtic reel.
The talents of newcomers Van Essen and Barker add an extra sound dimension and quality which established Iona fans will love and which will make new fans of others.

Troy, too, is not just a virtuoso on pipes and whistles, he is a marvellously useful musician, also contributing some well placed mandolin, slide and e-bow guitar, as well as some effective backing vocals.
