On the far side of 30, with no friends and no future, she latches onto the notion of becoming a prizefighter with a doggedness and a gleam in her eye that will make you smile.
In fact, it makes Maggie herself smile, and her sunny determination sets Frankie — who insists, at first, that she's too old to train, and anyway, he doesn't teach girls — to grit his teeth and grumble sideways (as only Eastwood can).
The exchanges between Frankie and Scrap, full of unfinished sentences and affectionate insults, are a pleasure to witness: two seasoned colleagues, with decades of history, good and bad, behind them, jawboning and jousting — leaving the important stuff unsaid, because they don't have to say anything at all.

I mean, Frankie Fitzgerald is a really great writer, won a Pulitzer Prize for the book "Fire in the Lake" in 1973 or so.
Fitzgerald went to St. Mark's, which is the sort of sister school of Groton, and Wisner was a Southerner, a Mississippi boy, who came out of a variation on the American aristocracy, the kind of Mississippi version.
So Frankie -- daughter Frankie -- lost her father at a young age and didn't see as much of him as she would have liked; loved him very much; was close to him from afar; had a kind of romantic view of him.

Co-stars Hilary Swank and the magnificent Morgan Freeman, playing Frankie's unlikely protegee Maggie Fitzgerald and friend "Scrap-Iron" Dupris, give what are without question the best performances of their respective careers: deftly underplayed, their roles provide emotionally overwhelming impacts more powerful than anything glimpsed in the film's riotous fight sequences.
Forming an iron triangle forged from mutual dependence, Dunn and Dupris school the impulsive but untutored Maggie in both the techniques of boxing and the tradecraft of survival in a world pre-disposed to pulverise individualism.

"Frankie's Place" is a book about his wife's rustic cabin in Maine where he courted the author Frances FitzGerald and then, having won her hand, moved right in with her to live happily ever after.

FitzGerald, who became famous for her incandescent 1971 book on Vietnam, "Fire in the Lake," was, as Sterba tells you in this memoir, the daughter of socialite Marietta Peabody Tree and Desmond FitzGerald, who rose in the CIA to become head of its clandestine operations.
Such strenuous activities should have come as no surprise, for one of her great-grandfathers was the Rev. Endicott Peabody, who founded and for 56 years ruled over Groton School, the famously austere Massachusetts boarding school for upper-class boys.
Sterba handles with sufficient aplomb the love story that is the subtitle of "Frankie's Place." It turns out that for all the security of her position, FitzGerald, no less then Sterba, longed for a home.
