PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Selected Artist Biography - Frankie Trumbauer
After serving in the US Navy during World War I, Frankie Trumbauer became a professional musician, working first in local bands before moving to Chicago to play and record with the Benson Orchestra and Ray Miller.
By this time Trumbauer's originality was easily discernible, and in 1927 he gained his own recording contract with Okeh, leading to the creation of some of the most important recordings of the era by white jazz musicians.
Trumbauer played most members of the saxophone family but specialized in alto and C-melody saxophones; he was only successful jazz specialist on the C-melody instrument.

The preeminent white saxophonist of the 1920s, Frankie Trumbauer was a major influence on jazz performers of all colors -- at his peak, his supreme standing on the alto was comparable to the kind of dominance later enjoyed by Charlie Parker.
Born May 30, 1901, in Carbondale, IL, Trumbauer -- often called "Tram" by his contemporaries -- was playing with Chicago's Benson Orchestra when he was spotted by Bix Beiderbecke and quickly recruited to join the legendary cornetist in Jean Goldkette's orchestra.
With the onset of World War II, Trumbauer was assigned to the Civil Aeronautics Authority; still, he continued to pursue music in his off-hours, playing with Russ Case and cutting a number of New York studio dates during the latter half of the 1950s.

From their first record dates together with mid-western pickup groups in the early 1920s until Bix's untimely death in 1931, they were almost inseparable, working together in Trumbauer's band in St. Louis, then with Jean Goldkette, and finally with Paul Whiteman's enormous aggregation.
They made a high living in the commercial dance bands of their day, and their individuality was not entirely lost in those big orchestras, for always there were sympathetic arrangers who gave them solo spots or opportunities to lead ensembles written in their personal styles.

Actually, Trumbauer (or "Tram" as he was called by his close friends) was one of the most influential saxophonists of the 1920's, and along with Jimmy Dorsey and Rudy Weidoeft, his playing influenced nearly all of the major jazz sax players who came into prominence in the late 1920's and early 1930's.
Trumbauer will always be known as the musical sidekick and soulmate of the legendary jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke.

Frankie Trumbauer has received unfair treatment in some jazz history books.
A brilliant C-melody saxophonist, Tram was overshadowed by his good friend, cornetist Bix Beiderbecke; many forget that some of Bix's greatest solos were taken on records actually led by Trumbauer.
Fortunately, the collector's TOM label has reissued on three CDs not only all of the saxophonist's dates as a leader through 1934 that do not include Beiderbecke, but also Tram's features with Paul Whiteman, plus some other notable appearances as a sideman.
