Franklin's Ground Squirrel - Meet Your Neighbors
Today the Franklins ground squirrel is very rare in the Chicago Wilderness region, as well as in the United States in general.
A Franklins ground squirrel burrow must be deep and well drained to be insulated from heat and cold.
Franklins ground squirrels do sometimes eat game bird eggs and, as a result, are not well liked by some bird hunters.

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology - Biogeographic patterns in Franklins ground squirrel, Spermophilus franklinii: implications for conservation
Franklins ground squirrel, Spermophilus franklinii, is one of the least studied and most poorly known of the ground squirrel species.
In recent years, conservation interest in FGS has grown as perceived declines of this species in parts of its range have prompted it to be proposed for, or actually listed as, a state-endangered species.
Additional populations, sampled in 2001 from areas where FGS are of conservation concern, are currently being incorporated into my dataset.

 Pittsburgh City Paper - ONLINE
The museum is built next to a reconstructed wall of the fort and has a modernist 1960s-public-works sort of design that resembles the mouth of the Squirrel Hill tunnel.
Though I was attempting to pose as an undercover “tourist,” Blockhouse curator Franklin LaCava -- a bespectacled, slow-talking gentleman who knows much of Fort Pitt’s history by heart -- quickly found me, and made such eager, gentle inquiries that I had to ’fess up.
Because the renovations call for tearing up the structure’s concrete floor, they’ve provided an opportunity for an archaeological dig of the Blockhouse’s foundation, which is practically the only remaining undisturbed ground on the Point.

 ASM 2004
Particular attention was focused on rare or endangered mammals in this area which include all species of bats, the pygmy shrew (Sorex hoyi), the star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata), the southern bog lemming (Synaptomys cooperi), the woodland vole (Microtus pinetorum), the western harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis), and Franklin's ground squirrel (Spermophilus franklinii).
During the summer of 2003, a preliminary survey of the distribution and abundance of small mammals and bats was conducted at 13 natural areas in Porter and La Porte counties of northwestern Indiana.
We hope that additional research will give us a better picture of the distribution and abundance of these rare and endangered mammals in this area.

Wingate Prairie - Into the Wild
This unique prairie land, with its rolling terrain, oak savanna and conifer groupings, is home to several rare and endangered plant and animal species including prairie buttercup, pinweed, queen of the prairie, pale vetchling, purple flowering raspberry, silvery blue butterfly, and the Franklin ground squirrel.
In recognition of his service, the 33.5-acre prairie within Veteran Acres was dedicated as an Illinois Nature Preserve in 1994 and named in honor (posthumously) of Mr.
Amid the gently rolling hills of billowing grasses, a small patch of queen of the prairie and some purple-flowering raspberry in a small pine forest can be appreciated on a summertime stroll.
