Franklin acts as a thoughtful foil to Linus, and is as adept at quoting the Old Testament as Linus is. One connection that Franklin and Charlie Brown have is their mutual interest in their grandfathers.

One of the most interesting inclusions is that of several letters of complaint, ranging from readers whose religious sensibilities have been offended to a 1969 missive from Schulz's own syndicate asking him not to depict Franklin in the same school as the white students anymore.
Naturally, the much-loved Peanuts holiday specials are covered, as is the musical adaptation You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, but it's the strips that really make the book.

I was thumbing through an old Fawcett paperback of Peanuts and came across a particularly nasty one with Peppermint Patty and Franklin: Franklin's practicing hockey, and Patty wants to use the space for her own practice, so she says to him, "How many fl hockey players are there in the NHL?" in the last panel.
PEANUTS, when you come right down to it, is a strip about loneliness, frustration, and many other rather negative things.
I can't think of any other Peanuts strip (Franklin or no) where race is even alluded to...well, maybe Jose Peterson?...certainly not a factor in the punchline.

The loss of "Peanuts" is akin to the loss we experienced when Muppets creator Jim Henson died nearly 10 years ago.

A favorite of mine that is in this book is the tale of Charlie Brown's adventures at camp, as well as where Lucy bamboozles CB into giving up his chance for a free movie for her.
Schulz' talent for understated satire is shown during the 1968 strip that introduces the Black child Franklin to the proceedings (this actually received hate mail that Schulz wisely ignored).
Lucy is just Lucy, practicing her grouchiness, conducting one actual "crab-in," and selling her psychological advice for a nickel a visit; surprisingly, she does manage to cure Snoopy from the state of "rejection-slip shock" he falls into after his publisher rejects his novel and also helps him get over his night-time fear of vampires.

OK when they asked the parents to not send peanuts or peanut by products to school i was cool with that...
He is 4 now and knows not to eat peanuts and always asks when he is given food by others if there is peanuts in it.
On another note, my bother who is a pilot for SW says that taking peanuts out of the planes is stupid because of all the years they have served peanuts, everything is covered in peanut dust and there is not way to get it all out.

Beyond the tint required to render his skin tone, Franklin was a blank.
But Franklin was a classic "token fl," and that era saw more than a few Franklins.
