Franklin County, in northeast Georgia, was the first county established in the state after the American Revolution.
The county seat, Carnesville, was incorporated in 1807, and in 1826 a second, more substantial courthouse was built there.
The early settlers cleared large tracts for agriculture, and for two hundred years much of the land was devoted to cotton, corn, sorghum, and more recently, livestock.
