Franklin County was created in 1855 as one of the original counties of the Kansas Territory.
The county was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin.
As of the census² of 2000, there were 24,784 people, 9,452 households, and 6,720 families residing in the county.

The largest city and county seat is Lawrence, and the county is included in the Lawrence Metropolitan Statistical Area.
In the county the population was spread out with 20.40% under the age of 18, 26.40% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 16.90% from 45 to 64, and 7.90% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $37,547, and the median income for a family was $53,991.

The first Kansas Territorial legislative assembly required that every person performing the marriage ceremony should keep a record thereof and within 3 months forward a certificate to the county recorder, who was required to record it in a book kept for that purpose.
Franklin County was created in 1854 with the county being formally organized in 1857.
The Kansas Board of Education was organized in 1873 to issue state diplomas and state certificates which entitled recipients to teach anywhere in Kansas.

Franklin County as an organization begins in 1855, when the territorial legislature of Kansas by an act, originally organized thirty-three counties, Franklin county being the seventh in number, following after Douglas which was the sixth, named in the law.
The boundaries began at the south-east corner of Douglas county and enclosed twenty-four miles square, an area of 576 square miles, containing 368,640 acres.
The county was named after Benjamin Franklin, a great American, and is rich in Indian lore, which dates back centuries before Kansas became a territory.

JOSEPH N. BAKER, farmer and stock-raiser, P. Lane, was born in Putnam County, Ind., September 24, 1838, and came to Franklin County with his father, Joshua Baker in the fall of 1855.
Reese was married at Greenville, Ohio, in 1852, to Eleanora Stamm, a native of Montgomery County, Ohio.

ENOCH HARPOLE, attorney, was born in Clark County, Ohio, in May, 1850, and came with his father, William Harpole, to Kansas in the spring of 1857, residing with them in Chase County.
MILO R. HARRIS, lumber dealer, was born at Marietta, Ohio, April 4, 1842 and emigrated to Kansas with his father in 1859 and assisted him in farming, near Centropolis, Franklin County.
He was elected Surveyor of Franklin County in 1875, in 1877, and again in fall of 1881, and Engineer of the city of Ottawa in spring of 1882.

It is a tract of land of 3,600 acres of land in one body near Williamsburg, in Franklin county.

By the "Pottawatomie Massacre" is meant the killing of James P. Doyle, and his two sons--Drury and William Doyle--Allen Wilkinson and William Sherman, by John Brown and a party of men under his command.
After talking with them some time they took them back into the house, and brought out William Sherman, Dutch Henry's brother and marched him down into Pottawatomie Creek, where John Brown's two youngest sons slew him with their short swords, as in the former instances, and left his body lying in the creek.
In a letter published in the Kansas Monthly, for January 1880, Judge Hanway wrote: "I ventured to approach one of the eight, and from him I learned the programme contemplated.
