As of 2000 U.S. Census, the population of Jefferson County was 662,047.
The county is located in the north-central portion of the state, on the southern extension of the Appalachians, in the center of the iron, coal and limestone belt of the South.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older.

The county was established February 4, 1814 by the Alabama Territorial Legislature, preceded only by Madison (1808), Mobile(1812) and Clark (1812) counties, which had been organized from Mississippi territory.
Illustrious American patriot Benjamin Franklin had been dead less than 30 years, when a large tract of land in Northwest Alabama was dubbed Franklin County in his honor.

Malone was chosen the County seat and court sessions were held in the "Academy." A new courthouse was erected the next year, which was also the jail and a house of worship; and the present one was built in 1885 at an expense of some $35,000.

In the "Fenian Raids" of 1866 and 1870 Franklin was one of the rendezvous.

 Welcome to Colbert County, Alabama!
Colbert County is a beautiful area with a deep history dating back to the Cherokee and Chickasaw Indians and the early French traders around 1715.
The split from Franklin County was also due in part to population concentrations; most of Franklin County's population lived in the northern part, and it was very inconvenient to travel twenty miles to the county seat.
It was not reestablished until 24 February 1870, and Tuscumbia was chosen as the county seat.

Richard Ellis, planter, jurist, and legislator, son of Ambrose and Cecilia (Stokes) Ellis, was born in the "Tidewater Section" (probably Lunenburg County) of Virginia, on February 14, 1781.
Late in 1835 he was chosen by Miller and Sevier counties as a delegate to the Arkansas constitutional convention scheduled to meet at Little Rock on January 4, 1836.
A son, Nathaniel Dandridge Ellis, also settled in Old Red River County and was granted a league and labor of land as the head of a household.

By 1850, Hancock County was made from the northern portion of Walker, and in 1858, the name was changed to Winston to honor the first Alabama-born governor John Anthony Winston.
Winston County gained notoriety during the Civil War at a meeting at Looney's Tavern where supposedly Winston was declared the "Free State of Winston" with plans to secede from the state though it never did.
