I. The Franklin County Solid Waste Management District received a technical assistance grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for the 2000-2001 fiscal year.
A brief presentation on Massachusetts (MA) regulations concerning the proper handling and storage of mercury, and the federal and state Universal Waste Rule was made by MA Department of Environmental Protection staff member, Lori Segall.
The Franklin County Solid Waste District covers 500 square miles of very rural area, thus it would not be cost-effective to have only one person removing mercury switches due to the travel expenses and time involved, but in centralized collection locations and areas with high population densities one person will suffice.
