 Benjamin Franklin
Franklin was particularly concerned with both the situation of America -- notably impact of the the British Mercantilist policies, abundant land and scarce labor on American economic development.
Franklin was much inspired by William Petty, particularly on population, believing that labor, rather than gold, was the appropriate measure of value (for this, Franklin was given an enthusiastic applause by Marx).
Franklin departed from the Mercantilists in the "war" concept of commerce.

The Franklin Institute: Where's the Rest of the Iceberg? It's Stored in the Basement
It is a fragment of a lightning rod made in 1749 by Ben Franklin himself, and it is one of the finest pieces in the museum's collection.
It is far superior to the Franklin lightning rod on display on the second floor in the "Franklin -- He's Electric!" exhibition, a straight, barely rusty instrument that evokes nothing of the wrath of God.
Most of the contents of the Franklin Institute's attic, however, are a reflection of the museum's bifurcated mission -- to be a repository of the history of technology while devoting most of its public space to leading-edge, preferably interactive, displays, like walk-through brains and virtual-reality games.

Meet the real heart of The Franklin Institute.
In 1993, when the city experienced one of the worst blizzards in recent history, the Franklin Institute was practically the only place open on the Parkway after Jenkins made his way in early that morning to assure the building was up and running.
And every time she is in Philadelphia, she says, "I have to stop by The Franklin Institute to see him and he has to show me to everybody, he's so funny." Jenkins admits he's overwhelmingly proud of Kathleen, "the baby" as he calls her, who grew up to be so successful.
Perhaps future visitors to The Franklin Institute, while exploring the heart or taking in a show at the planetarium, might see Jenkins running by, a one-man argument for the theory of perpetual motion, on his way from solving one crisis to heading off another.
