The son of missionaries, Schaffner was born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in that country.
Schaffner was elected President of the Directors Guild of America in 1987.
Schaffner passed away in 1989 and was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in the Westwood Village area of Los Angeles, California.

Franklin Schaffner, one of several prominent directors during U.S. television's "Golden Age," worked in such prestigious anthology series as Studio One (CBS), The Kaiser Aluminum Hour (NBC), Playhouse 90 (CBS), The DuPont Show of the Week (NBC), the Edward R. Murrow series Person to Person (CBS), and the dramatic series The Defenders (CBS).
Schaffner later became known as an "actor's director," but his television work is known primarily for his unique use of the camera.
Schaffner's experience with the spontaneity and immediacy of live special events made him a logical choice as one of three directors for the 1948 Democratic and Republican political conventions held in Philadelphia.

Franklin J. Schaffner was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1920, the son of German Reformed Church missionaries.
Schaffner returned to New York City where he worked for a world peace organization, which led to a job as an assistant director for the documentary film series, "The March of Time." He then accepted a position as director in the news and public affairs department of CBS television news.
Schaffner is probably best known as the director of "Planet of the Apes" (1968), "Patton" (1970), for which he received an Academy Award for best director, and "Papillon" (1973).

Hollywood producer Jerry Wald was impressed by Schaffner's TV output and hired the director to helm the 1963 film The Stripper.
Schaffner's first big-budget project was The Warlord (1965); the director later credited this period epic with sparking his fascination with different cultures.
It is at this point that Schaffner's Hollywood career truly peaked; with the exception of such films as Papillon (1973), most of the director's subsequent projects were of diminishing quality.

The son of Protestant American missionaries, he was raised in Japan till age five, when his father's death forced the family back to the US.
He took up law at Columbia University, but his studies there were interrupted by WW II service as a lieutenant with the Navy Amphibious Forces in North Africa and Europe and with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in India, Burma and China.
In these, as in his subsequent films, Schaffner proved himself a proficient craftsman who was capable of handling large-scale productions as well as intimate dramas.

Der Film wurde zu einem der Klassiker schlechthin, das Ende ist vielen bekannt, die nicht einmal den Film gesehen haben und ohne den Sreifen wären die "Simpsons" um einige Filmzitate ärmer.
Wie man an den Fortsetzungen sieht, war Franklin J. Schaffners Film ein riesen Erfolg, der auch noch bei den Academy Awards für die damaligen revolutionären Affenmasken mit einem Spezial-Oscar ausgezeichnet wurde.
Das korrekte Bildformat erkennt man sehr gut am Stift, der, anders als bei der RC2 Special Edition, nicht beschnitten ist.
