Born in Fantastic Four Annual #6 (November 1968), Franklin is the young son of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman of the Fantastic Four and the older brother of Valeria Richards.
Franklin was later kidnapped by his time-traveling grandfather Nathaniel Richards, and replaced with his adult counterpart, Psi-Lord, who had been raised by Nathaniel in a dimension outside of time.
Franklin, with the assistance of Ashema, one of the Celestials, returned the "reborn" heroes to their home world and was reunited with his family.

Franklin was simply a new character, and his introduction didn't really cause any changes, or lead the FF down the path of aging.
A way to get Franklin out of the book in a more or less permanent way, back in those days when killing characters was not considered a first option.

Over the years Franklin or the Watcher or Reed have placed mental blocks on the poor kid to keep his powers in check.
Onslaught wanted to use X-Man to add Nate's psionic prowess to it's own and it needed Franklin in order to gain corporeal form (and to later on alter reality to it's liking), since it was up to then merely a being of pure psionic and electromagnetic energy.
Plus it was Onslaught and not Xavier who captured Franklin, it just appeared to Franklin as a young Xavier so it could trick the boy.
