  Schaffner, Franklin
Franklin Schaffner, one of several prominent directors during U.S. television's "Golden Age," worked in such prestigious anthology series as Studio One (CBS), The Kaiser Aluminum Hour (NBC), Playhouse 90 (CBS), The DuPont Show of the Week (NBC), the Edward R. Murrow series Person to Person (CBS), and the dramatic series The Defenders (CBS).
Schaffner later became known as an "actor's director," but his television work is known primarily for his unique use of the camera.
Schaffner's experience with the spontaneity and immediacy of live special events made him a logical choice as one of three directors for the 1948 Democratic and Republican political conventions held in Philadelphia.

Franklin J. Schaffner - Films as Director:
Schaffner's experience working on political television programs proved beneficial when he directed his second film, The Best Man, a story of two contenders for the presidential nomination at a political convention in Los Angeles.
A medieval costume picture, the film was a complete change for Schaffner, but he succeeded in capturing the visual splendor of the outdoor sequences—particularly in the first few minutes—and the excitement and gusto of the battle scenes.
Schaffner used the contrast to great effect, and the film was nominated for an Oscar.

 Patton (1970)
Franklin Schaffner directs the film in a fairly workmanlike manner.
While it'd be nice if Schaffner could portray war in the visceral and kinetic manner Steven Spielberg demonstrated in Saving Private Ryan, I'm happy to note that he is able to avoid Spielberg's overwrought sentimentality and his tendency to telegraph all of his points.
Their comments are combined with 1970 remarks from Schaffner, actor George C. Scott and others and are mixed in with production stills, on set "behind the scenes" footage, and finished film clips.

 Papillon (1973)
Director Franklin Schaffner never forces the theme on the viewer; it's demonstrated wholly by the actions of our hero, Papillon (Steve McQueen) as he continually perseveres and survives in the face of overwhelming odds.
As such, Schaffner really doesn't pepper us with comments about how overwhelming those odds were.
Schaffner should have either omitted the score altogether or made it more ubiquitous; as it stood, it provided a negative effect on the film.

The film's opening monologue alone is a masterful display of acting and character analysis, and everything that follows is sheer brilliance on the part of Scott and director Franklin J. Schaffner.
Schaffner (who died in 1989) and George C. Scott (who died in 1999) are heard only in interviews recorded for the film's 1970 release.
It's to the much-deserved credit of the underrated George C. Scott--simply brilliant here--and director Franklin Schaffner that the celebrated general of "Patton's" title comes across more the tragic hero and less the right-wing nutjob, especially considering that the film debuted in 1970.
