The Alamein line is one of two branch lines, neatly tucked away in the mid suburbs, that feeds into one of the main lines on the suburban network.
The line was electrified for traction from Heidelberg to Eltham on Sunday, 15th April 1923, and the remainder was switched on from Eltham to Hurstbridge on Monday, 2nd August 1926.
The line was frequented by the E and occasional L class electric locomotives, Taits, dog-boxes and CM parcels motors (all loosely but endearingly classified as "Red Rattlers") on freight work to and from the old Spur line at Mont Park (Junctured at Macleod), Hurstbridge, and the old APM siding to the Paper Mill at Fairfield.

Frankston is 43.923km from Flinders Street, and it has been the terminating point for suburban electric trains for almost seventy years.
The line was closed for a long period of time in the late 1970's, but reopened on the 16th September 1984 by the transport minister of the time, one Steve Crabb MLA.

i was on the frankston train heading towards the loop (caulfield loop) and just before is stoped at flagstaff i could see a big man hole with a very bright light coming out if it.
Ergo, Melbourne's future is a choice between suburban sprawl connected with a network of freeways or high-rise apartments connected by public transport and, given a democratic choice, Melburnians have a clear preference for the sprawl.
All these lines were on a 7-10minute timetable going out to a maximum 15 minutes late at night or early in the morning.

What the Melbourne train system is lacking at the moment is cross-suburban lines, which means that someone travelliing from Belgrave to Frankston would have to travel into the city and out again (a very long journey).
I also beleive that a line out to the airport is needed, although it may have the same problem as Brisbane and Sydney where it is under used.
The line would cross the Golf Course and intersect towards the western end of Holmesglen station platform, bridge over the freeway and the go underground for the last half a kilometre to the eastern side of Chadstone (where most of the proposed expansion is).

Last week's disclosure of a cost blowout in the Eastern Freeway Extension and the Scoresby Freeway (now called the 'Mitcham to Frankston Freeway') has caused the Public Transport Users Association to call for the immediate cancellation of the two freeways.
"We are calling on the government and the opposition to drop all plans for the Mitcham to Frankston freeway immediately and instead invest in public transport at a fraction of the cost.
The Ringwood and Scoresby freeways were first proposed in the 1969 transport plan for Melbourne, which would have seen a grid of freeways across the entire metropolitan area.

Not to mention all the overhaed upgrading that needed to take place on the Belgrave / Lilydale line although I suspect that was more from planning for running the Tangaras after a number had been ordered.
As an aside, platform trimming and overhead upgrades took place when Comeng trains were first introduced.
It was quite a joke that the extra power drawn by these trains (especially the air con) meant that circuit breakers kept tripping if 4-5 trains were in a given section especially on hot days.
