	The Metropolitan Museum of Art - Works of Art: European Paintings
		Pourbus was court painter of Archduke Albert in Brussels when in 1600 he went to Italy at the invitation of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua.
		This portrait must depict the Duke of Mantua's daughter, Margherita, to judge from Pourbus's full-length portrait of her dated 1605 in the Uffizi, Florence.
		In this period Rubens also worked for Vincenzo Gonzaga, but he eagerly left the painting of formal portraits and a gallery of "beauties" to Pourbus, who in 1611 became Maria de' Medici's court painter in Paris.

		Frans I (1545-81), his son and pupil, painted religious pictures and portraits.
		Frans II (1569-1622), son of Frans I, worked for the Court of the Spanish Regents of the Netherlands in Brussels, and in 1600 became Court Painter to the Duke of Mantua, being there at the same time as Rubens.

		Frans the younger followed the family tradition and executed portraits, portrait groups and, occasionally, religious subjects.
		In September 1599 Vincenzo Gonzaga I, 4th Duke of Mantua, was in Brussels and appointed Frans the younger his chief portrait painter.
		In 1606 Pourbus travelled to Paris to record the French royal family on the occasion of the Dauphin’s baptism for his aunt and godmother, Duchess Eleonora Gonzaga.

		Some were intended to forecast glorious prospects for the children, some were used in marriage negotiations and some to show the health and vigor of the rulers.

		Frans left for Mantua in 1600 (where Rubens was also working); he is recorded as having executed a number of portraits of the ducal family, but this did not preclude his working for other important patrons.
