Given to fleeing Huguenots in 1688, it was found that the climate is very similar to that in France, the settlers planted vines and today these wines are consumed throughout the world.
Sixteen of these vineyards form part of the Vignerons de Franschhoek which was formed to promote the valley and its wines.

Cape Town - Despite making "very good progress" battling a mountain fire near Franschhoek, firefighters were now concentrating their efforts in the one danger point identified during a helicopter reconnaissance flight on Sunday.
"The Franschhoek fire is contained but for the one hotspot above the Dewdale farm," said Danie Wilds, fire services manager at the Cape Winelands district municipality.
Wilds said in excess of 100 ground crew, and an additional 40 professional firefighters in about 15 vehicles were trying to prevent the fire spreading to Jonkershoek valley and over the Hottentots Holland mountain range.
