The elder branch of the House of Este, the House of Welf, produced dukes of Bavaria (1070–1139, 1156–1180), dukes of Saxony (1138–1139, 1142–1180), a German king (1198–1218), dukes and electors of Brunswick and Lüneburg (1208–1918), kings of Hanover (1815–1866), and monarchs of the United Kingdom (1714–1901).

Franz Josef I (English: Francis Joseph) Emperor of Austria, king of Hungary, (1830-1916), born in Vienna.
Franz Josef was the eldest son of Archduke Franz Karl (Francis Charles), who was brother and heir of Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I. Because his father renounced his right to the throne, Franz Josef became emperor when Ferdinand abdicated near the end of the revolution of 1848.
Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo in June 1914.

Franz Strauss married Elise Seiff, the daughter of a regimental band director, in 1851.
While this was a very productive period for him as a composer and performer, it was a tragic period of his life; a 10-month-old son died of tuberculosis, and then cholera took the lives of his wife and young daughter, leaving him a widower at the age of thirty-two.
