Franz Benda war das älteste von den sechs überlebenden Kindern des Leinewebers Johann Georg Benda und dessen Frau Dorothea Benda, geborene Brixy, der Tochter eines Dorfkantors.
Dort lernte er den Komponisten Johann Joachim Quantz kennen, der ihn an den preußischen Kronprinzen Friedrich empfahl.
Da Benda nach seiner Konvertierung zum Protestantismus in Dresden zahlreiche Anfeindungen über sich ergehen lassen musste, nahm er 1733 Quantz' Angebot an, zu Friedrich zu gehen, der gerade dabei war sich in Ruppin eine eigene Kapelle aufzubauen.

Eldest of five musical children of Jan Jiri [Johann Georg] Benda (1686-1757) and Dorota Brixi.
In 1720 he ran away from his position in the choir at St. Nicolas's in Prague; he ended up in Dresden, where he sang in the court chapel choir and began study of violin and viola.
Benda was famous for his cantabile playing; copies of his violin works contain embellished melodic lines that perhaps represent the way he played them.

The Benda family has provided a continuing musical tradition from the time of the first Jan Jiri Benda, born in 1686 in the Bohemian village of Mstetice, to the present day.
Franz Benda was a prolific composer, chiefly of instrumental music, and left a quantity of symphonies, concertos and sonatas.
Franz Benda had a considerable reputation as a violinist and in the 1740s and 1750s had undertaken concert tours that had taken him to the courts of Bayreuth, Dresden, Weimar, Gotha and elsewhere, while at Potsdam he played solo parts with the King in the many evening concerts at the palace.

The first Jan Jiri Benda was born in 1626 in Bohemia.
Five of his six sons became distinguished musicians, the cadenzas of both Franz’s concertos are by members of the family and the conductor on this record is himself a descendant of the great Benda dynasty of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Of the two composers represented Franz is, perhaps, the more interesting, living as he did for some time in Germany during a period when the baroque was moving purposefully towards the classical era of Mozart and Haydn.
