FranzBerwald, descended from a family of Swedish musicians of remoter German origin, was the most important figure in Swedish music of the 19th century.
Of Berwald's four surviving symphonies the third, the Sinfonie singulière, remains the most popular.
Like the symphonies of his Danish contemporary Carl Nielsen, Berwald's symphonies have idiosyncratic titles, the first known as Sinfonie sérieuse, the second Sinfonie capricieuse and the fourth originally as Sinfonie naïve.
Franz Adolf Berwald (born in Stockholm on July 23, 1796 and died there on April 3, 1868) was a composer.
Berwald tried to get several scholarships, but only got one from the King, which enabled him to study in Berlin, where he worked hard on operas despite not getting any chance to put them on the stage.
Berwald died in Stockholm in 1868 of pneumonia and was interred there in the Norra begravningsplatsen.

FranzBerwald (1796 - 1868): Concertino for Vl and Piano in A minor
Berwald's symphonies (for which he is best known) have received some outstanding recordings, particularly the 'Sinfonie Singulière' of 1845, and now it's time for his chamber music.
In addition to being a fine composer, Berwald was a violinist, a fact that is amply displayed in the 'Duo for Violin and Piano' and 'Duo Concertante for Two Violins.' Berwald's string writing is deliciously lyrical and presents a number of technical challenges that keep the soloists on their toes.
