Simandl's method, many of his works, and many of his studies have become familiar to bassist all over the world.
The next several generations of students of Simandl were also active composers and pedagogues.
I thank our colleague Fred Devainey, a bassist from south Illinois who is very knowledgeable about the bassists from the Simandl school, for bringing the existence of this work to my attention.

His Nouvelle Technique De La Contrebasse is a new approach to double bass playing that works especially well for soloing.
The main difference in his approach from Franz Simandl in his use of the left hand.
Rabbath's method is progressive, some argue that Simandl's method should be the first taught to beginning students because the rigid position system gives them a very good idea of where they are on the fingerboard, and it is easier to play in tune.

Most players have been thoroughly grounded in what we call closed hand technique.
Franz Simandl’s famous New Method (which is not “new” at all — it was first published over a century ago) is still the leading proponent of this system.
In the “closed” technique the left hand spans a whole step (on one string) which requires the hand to stay compact and move quickly.

I am useing the teqnique book of F. Simandle(i beleve thats how its spelt, right off the top of my head) But yeah i reconmend the book to any one who is interested in fully understanding the double bass.
It's Franz Simandl, and to be quite honest, i think his etudes are utter crap that have no real world value (although they have become a standard), whereas Bille's and Nanny's etudes not only have more relevance, but are much more melodic.
BTW, take no offense if you're a big fan of simandl.
