Soxhlet extractor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Soxhlet extractor is a type of laboratory glassware invented in 1879 by Franz von Soxhlet.
It was originally designed for the extraction of lipid from a solid test material, but can be used whenever it is difficult to extract any compound from a solid.
At the end of an extraction, the excess solvent may be removed using a rotary evaporator, leaving behind only the extracted lipid.

 Extraction Methods
Technically, our distillation devices are "modified soxhlet extracters." The original soxhlet extracter was developed by Franz Von Soxhlet, a German agricultural chemist, in the early part of this century.
When gentle heat is applied to the main flask, the solvent begins to evaporate and the solvent vapors reach the cold condenser at the top of the flask and begin to liquefy on the sides of the condenser.
Dump and squeeze out the spent plant material in the soxhlet basket, then start a fresh basket of herb in the extracter using the same solvent which continually re-distills and extracts regardless of how much extract is infused into it in the bottom of the main flask.

After papers on the physiological chemistry of milk (1873) and on butter formation (1876), he published an important work in the field of lipid technology (1879).
He described a new to extract fats from milks which was later used around the world for the extraction of lipids in all biological materials and known as Soxhlet's apparatus.
Thus, with that invention, Soxhlet is yet considered in Germany as the "reformator of infant feeding".

 Lipid extraction, general methods
Several extraction procedures may be found in books and articles aiming at the improvement of lipid recovery from any kind of organisms, tissues or cell types.
After the first famous studies of Chevreul on the dissolution of lipid materials in various solvents, it is necessary to jump to 1879 when Franz von Soxhlet described the first method based on an automatic solvent extraction (diethyl ether) for milk lipids (Die gewichtsanalytische Bestimmung des Milchfettes, Dingler's Polytechnisches J 1879, 232, 461).
A further improvement was made in 1914 when a mixture of ethanol/ether (3/1) was used for lipid extraction (Bloor WR, J Biol Chem 1914, 17, 377).

Taking a cue from Spallanzani, he found that heating below boiling, then rapidly cooling wine, killed the spoilage organisms busily trying to turn it into vinegar.
This heat sterilization process, dubbed 'pasteurization' (not 'pasture-ization' as some call it), was first proposed for use on milk in 1886 by German agricultural chemist Franz von Soxhlet.
The first commercial pasteurization machines came on-line in the mid-1890's and remained the standard for decades.
