In the News (Thu 8 Jan 09)

The Scourge of Napa Valley, - Inc. Article
Franzia, the chairman and CEO of Bronco Wine, is sitting in his office in the San Joaquin Valley of California.
Franzia, 62, is a jowly winemaker with a barrel torso and little patience for critics.
Franzia dismisses the Napa vintners as "a bunch of whiners." He believes that the wine industry has become intoxicated by elitism, inflated prices, and its own PR about terroir--the idea that a wine is uniquely a product of the place it comes from, and by extension that some places are better than others.

Vinography: A Wine Blog: Fred Franzia: Great Businessman or Wine Antichrist?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Franzia is, of course, the guy behind the Two Buck Chuck juggernaut and the recent loser of a 6 month court battle with the Napa Valley Vintner's association over the labeling of his wines.
Franzia, and his Bronco wine company, are certainly a force to be reckoned with, and while the Supreme Court has declared that Franzia can't sell wine with Napa in the name unless the grapes come from there, that will just be a tiny speed bump for him, I'm sure.
Franzia is a showman and he is wild and irreverent but as much as many of you may dislike him--he is bringing in people like me and my social group.

THE WINE ENIGMA: Wine in a Box
According to a spokesperson for Franzia, the reason for Franzia's success is the premium quality, reasonable prices, the numerous advantages of the Winetap package (keeps the wine fresh after opening, takes less space to store, easier to open/easier to pour, etc.) and Freshness Dating.
Their budget is limited, their palate in new to the world of wine, and has to be weaned from the sugary sweet taste of soda, and they want shelf life in the product, along with ease of storage and use.
Obviously Franzia has done their homework, and the spokesperson for Franzia hit the nail on the head when I asked him why Fanzia was so popular.

 franzia - Consumerist
Apparently a lot of "corporate" wineries are taking advantage of this law and importing tons and tons of the foreign stuff—imports are up 229% this year alone.
From Decanter: "One industry insider said that the Ceres-based Wine Group in the Central Valley, which sells Franzia wines, was one example of a winery that used imported wine in its blends." This behavior is causing an uproar among American wine growers.
This is the sort of thing that really depends on consumer choise, so how do you know which wines to choose?

The company is best known for its low-cost Charles Shaw brand wine that was recently awarded as "Winery of the Year" by the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium.
Despite such awards, Franzia works hard to increase the acceptance of low cost wines in the restaurant industry.

the new franzia boxes come with a spigot-type valve, which (after a bit of pulling and twisting) are removable.
On a side note: I added a step with the anti-skunk solution (also featured on mythbusters), as it does a decent job of removing the wine smell.

These pictures are a little out of order, as I had the idea for this after I had cleaned out the bag, but they should still work for you.
To remove the bag, Grasp the fl valve part in one hand, and in the other hand, grasp the white plastic retaining ring (note: your valve and retaining ring may be of a different color and construction, but I know for a fact this works with franzia).

As an alternative to a soft drink, for chugging in a cold state, perhaps it might suffice.
Products like this give boxed wines a bad name, particularly since Franzia’s products are visible in just about every supermarket.
