The institute – which came to be known as a "right-wing think tank" – didn't attract much attention nationally in the early years, mainly because the prevailing notion in most of the western world was that government had a large role to play in improving the social and economic conditions of citizens.
In Canada, the Fraser Institute began to attract a lot of attention in the second half of the 1980s, as the debate about free trade with the United States heated up – partially because of the reports it was releasing and partially because of the people who were attracted to the organization.
The Fraser Institute has called for changes such as a flatter tax system, private involvement in health care, and allowing parents more choice in their children's education (vouchers that can be used to help pay the cost of a private school education).

It was a curious study because the actual statistics contained in the study (as opposed to the interpretation in Fraser Institute news releases and interviews) directly contradicted the claim that the media were biased against the Liberals.

In October, the Fraser Institute published Martin Collacott’s "Canada’s Immigration Policy: The Need for Major Reform", Public Policy Sources, Number 64.
My first thought was that the Fraser Institute was going to add a necessary free market perspective to the immigration issue as they have done with recent commentaries on other social issues such as gun control, gambling, education and drug usage.
I believe that this immigration issue is a similar battle for the soul of the Fraser Institute.

The survey is based on waiting times for the 12 specialties: plastic surgery, gynaecology, opthalmology, otolarygology, general surgery, neuro surgery, orthopaedic surgery, cardiovascular surgery (elective), urology, internal medicine, radiation oncology and medical oncology.
What Walker doesn't say is that this "bad news" for Canadians is really "good news" for the Fraser Institute, whose sole reason for existence is to flen the name of all things public and whitewash everything coporrate.
