  Fraternal Forestry
Fraternal Forestry is a term for a movement of fraternal organizations (or friendly societies) marked by a confusing history of merger, separation and charitable activity throughout Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.
The origins of the movement are unclear, and the Foresters' claim to be descended from so-called Friendly Societies of Thirteenth Century England is almost certainly an exaggeration.
In 1931 both the Royal Templars of Temperance and the Modern Brotherhood of America became part of the movement.

The distinction between formal and substantive rationality is the conceptual device suggested by Weber for uncoupling the tensions between, on the one hand, the efficiency of institutions and, on the other, substantive irrationalities in their functioning in terms of egalitarian, fraternal, caritative, and we might add, ecological values.
The article argues that the assumptions and core precepts of community forestry are more in line with those of neoliberalism than with those of the traditional environmental movement (as it came on the scene in the 1970s).
The key criticism brought to the fore by McCarthy’s analysis, however, is that community forestry initiatives often hold a romantic and apolitical conception of ‘the community.’ The initiatives and policies that support them rarely question the purportedly ‘unitary community interest’ and the political nature of access and control over resources.
