ARVAL BROTHERS (Fratres Arvales), in Roman antiquities, a college or priesthood, consisting of twelve members, elected for life from the highest ranks in Rome, and always apparently, during the empire, including the emperor.
But apart from this, there is proof of the high antiquity of the college, which was said to have been older than Rome itself, in the verbal forms of the song with which, down to late times, a part of the ceremonies was accompanied, and which is still preserved.
The Arvales also offered sacrifice and solemn vows on behalf of the imperial family on the 3rd of January and on other extraordinary occasions.

The office of the Fratres Arvales was for life, and was not taken away even from an exile or captive.
The passage in Varro being the only mention of the Arvales that dates from republican times, it is a highly probable conjecture that this may have been one of the obsolete or half-forgotten cults, several of which, we know, were revived by Augustus.
The principal duty of the Arvales was to celebrate a three days' festival in honour of the Dea Dia, supposed by Marini to be Ceres, but now identified with Ops.

ACCA LARENTIA (not Laurentia), in Roman legend, the wife of the shepherd Faustulus, who saved the lives of the twins Romulus and Remus after they had been thrown into the Tiber.
She had twelve sons, and on the death of one of them Romulus took his place, and with the remaining eleven founded the college of the Arval brothers (Fratres Arvales).
The tradition that Romulus and Remus were suckled by a wolf has been explained by the suggestion that Larentia was called lupa ("courtesan," literally "she-wolf") on account of her immoral character (Livy i.

 Dea Dia Summary
The worship of the Roman goddess Dea Dia was in the hands of a priesthood of twelve, the fratres arvales (Arval brethren), and she possessed a shrine in a grove outside Rome at the fifth (or sixth, depending on the period) milestone on the Via Campana, in the modern suburb of La Magliana.
From the previous period, we only know of the existence of the arvales and of a public sacrifice, mentioned by Varro (De lingua latina 5, 74).
She was worshipped at Ambarvalia, in May. Her priests were called Fratres Arvales.

Roman Public Religion; roman history, roman civilization
There were twelve Fratres Arvales (Arval Brethern) were responsible for the festival to Dea Dia held in May. The festival was an old agricultural celebration at which the Arval Brethern sang a carmen that was so old the Romans of Cicero's day had long since ceased to understand its meaning.
Augustus became a member of the Fratres Arvales which assumed the duties of celebrating rituals in honor of the imperial family.
Instead, worship of the emperor was incorporated into the pre-existing structures of Roman religion (e.g., the assumption of duties by the Fratres Arvales in imperial cults).

Yet, with only commemorative altars as evidence of vow rites, it is difficult to perceive the full extent of these rituals: the altars commemorate only a vow fulfilled, not the initial request to the god.
Derks thus appeals to the extensive documentation on votive rites among the Fratres Arvales of Rome, which extend from initial vows through rites of reaffirmation to rites of completion, to demonstrate the complexity and successive stages of votive rites.
Those commemorated in Gaul seem to have concerned private matters, in contrast to the high civic purposes of the Fratres Arvales.

 Religious Orders of Ancient Rome
The order of the "Fratres Arvales" was regarded to be as ancient as that of the Luperci and to have dated back to the time of Romulus.
The order was primarily concerned with the fields which it blessed once a year during the feast of the Ambarvalia as well as looking after boundaries and divisions of land as well as judging over disputes of this type.
It was believed that the Fratres Arvales or Sodales Arvales order was founded when Romulus joined the 12 sons of his nurse Acca Laurentia to bless the fields.
