Frau im Mond - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Frau im Mond is a science fiction silent movie released in 1929, and is often considered to be one of the first "serious" science fiction films.
It was written and directed by Fritz Lang, based on the novel Die Frau im Mond (1928, translated as The Rocket to the Moon in 1930) by his then-wife and collaborator Thea von Harbou.
The first successfully launched V-2 rocket at the rocket development facility in Peenemünde had the Frau im Mond logo painted on its base.

Fritz Lang FRAU im MOND vintage still / Germany 1929
Directed by Fritz Lang, Frau im Mond may appear scientifically outlandish to the modern viewer, and the high-style expressionistic acting of its actors overdone, but nevertheless the film should be recognized as a landmark which impacted world history.
The production models of the liquid-fired rockets from Frau im Mond were so advanced that in 1936 the Gestapo seized them as state secrets.
Frau im Mond maintains its impact to the present day.

Frau is noted to have pioneered the 3-2-1-liftoff sequence, and only the people who have seen it know more of it beyond that.
It's got an impressive pedigree — the technical sections are attributed to Dr. Hermann Oberth, known as the father of German rocketry and mentor to Dr.
For its time, though, the Oberth-penned sections of Frau im Mond represent the forefront of scientific knowledge in rocketry and astronomy.

Although it was never a box office hit, being a silent movie when the new "talkies" were all the rage, it was technically accurate and visionary for its time.
Indeed Frau im Mond's Moon rocket was virtually identical to the one Oberth he had already described and illustrated in his Die Rakete zu den Planetenraumen.
However, although Oberth and a young colleague by the name of Wernher von Braun got as far as testing their rocket engine in the lab, it was never destined to fly.

Nebel was born in Weißenburg and trained as an engineer.
He was an early member of the VfR and assisted with Hermann Oberth's failed publicity stunt on behalf of the group to launch a rocket at the premiere of Fritz Lang's film Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon).
Nebel acted very much as the group's spokesperson, organising the donation of materials from various local businesses, and negotiating with the Berlin municipal council for the use of a disused ammunition dump for the VfR's launchsite, or Raketenflugplatz.
