CIOT | The Chartered Institute of Taxation: VAT and fraus legis doctrine
Fraus legis is a legal principle developed by the Court of Justice of the European Communities (CJEC) that prevents a person from relying on a right in law where such reliance would constitute an abuse of that right (see Note (1)).
The main thrust of the application of fraus legis by the commissioners has been in relation to tax avoidance but one might consider that this abuse of law or fraus legis principle has a potentially vast application to a European tax such as VAT.
The use of the fraus legis principle, where the taxpayer relies on the wording of the UK legislation, is one that the author considers to be a step too far.

On "Frau Bauman, Frau Schmidt, and Frau Schwartz"
Their energy is entirely dependent upon his ability to intensify the language until their movement becomes tangible in the empty air, becomes an event in the viscera of the reader.
The shape of Theodore Roethke's "Frau Baumann, Frau Schmidt, and Frau Schwartz," narrow at the top and gradually widening, first to the pentameter of the break line, then, after an opening pentameter, back into eight two- and three-stress lines, abruptly resolves in the expansion and powerful stabilization of the heptameter.
"Frau Baumann, Frau Schmidt, and Frau Schwartz" is a poem that demonstrates particularly well this characteristic double vision of the artist, this illumination of the simultaneity of two realities.

tonevendor.com :. Pia Fraus - In Solarium CD
For fans of Rocketship, MBV, etc! Pia Fraus was formed in Tallinn, Estonia in the early spring of 1998 by a group of art-school students.
It gave a good overview of what they were doing for the first three years, and it was 3 songs from this album which came our way via a demo submission.
And we realised that the world had to hear the beauty of Pia Fraus as soon as possible...

Pia Fraus - In Solarium - Review
With an average age of about 20 years old, Pia Fraus have created an album that's probably wise beyond their years with In Solarium.
So, while the album sounds like it was created by a group who've been around a lot longer than Pia Fraus has, it ultimately drags a fair amount simply because there isn't much variety to it.
The songs themselves are brief and snappy for the most part (the 10 track disc clocks in at a lean 36 minutes), but even slight changeups (like the pitter-patter drum machine rhythm and waltzing pace of "On You") feel like welcome reliefs.

Mundane Sounds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
Plastilina, Pia Fraus' latest offering, follows in the EP tradition, and like their inspirations, they do it quite well.
Blending swirling, blissful guitars and dreamy boy/girl vocals all sung in a heavenly Nordic accent, Pia Fraus are clear descendents of the shoegazer family tree, yet they never really wear their lineage on their shoes, so don't fret about the comparison.
Instead of the drugged-out guitar heroics of yesteryear, Pia Fraus have a soft pop underbelly, and songs like "Obnoxious" and "Summer Before Spring" could rival Stereolab or Pale Saints in terms of catchy tuneage.

The great thing about Clairecords' roster of bands is that there's generally an excuse to include the terms "shoegazer" and "dreampop" into nearly every review of their artists.
From the wash of feedback, hazy guitar swirls to the hovering sheen of dreamy vocals, Pia Fraus has the shoegazer/dreampop idiom down pat.
Unlike Slowdive, Pia Fraus tends to rev things up quite a bit and keep things at a bouncy pace throughout the CD.

CSIRO PUBLISHING - Books & CDs
The morphology of Fraus is described in some detail with emphasis on the adult moth, and a new interpretation of hepialid male genitalia is presented.
Beyond describing and illustrating a primitive hepialid, these observations are intended to serve as reference for the study of the classification of Hepialoidea and lower Lepidoptera.
The adult moths, as well as male and female genitalia, are richly illustrated, and distribution maps and flight period diagrams are provided for all species.

Splendid Magazine reviews Pia Fraus: In Solarium
The similarities between Pia Fraus and Shields' ground-breaking My Bloody Valentine are numerous, and as such, listeners will most likely have one of two reactions to this album of shoegazer perfection: they'll either declare it a rip-off or they'll jump for joy.
A steady guitar refrain serves as the base element, while layer upon layer of voices and other instrumentation are blended seamlessly together, creating a delicate and classic shoegazer-styled arrangement.
While many bands have tried (often in vain) to recapture Shields' trademark aesthetic, Pia Fraus has done nothing short of mastering it, while never once sounding as if it were a forced study in shoegaze.

Pia Fraus is a young Estonian group who have managed to impress the critics in a short amount of time.
There have been a slew of hopeful contenders vying to fill this aching void, but never too much success -- and certainly none have made their contribution to the genre stand out as their own independent piece of work.
The Plastilina EP brings together five tracks from Pia Fraus' limited-run demo disc, Wonder What It's Like, which drip with the same sickeningly sweet pop harmonies that would be found in the band's later work, layered deep with spacey, noisy guitar work and enough reverb to give depth without going overboard.

Yet another super-young band, Pia Fraus is a shoegaze-loving group of 6 who create music that is perfect for summertime.

If they can wind a bit more of their early sound into their newest release, I'll be honestly even more excited about it.

If a copycat band asked me to name the act they'd be best off copycatting, Stereolab isn't the one that would first come to my mind.
Of course, Pia Fraus haven't asked me a damn thing, but if they did, I'd have to admit that I was wrong with my Stereolab thesis.
Plastilina EP not only finds a unique starting point in its heavy debt to early 'Lab fuzz-and-drone, but gives life to that particular brand of indie rock's infamous removedness, finding its own voice in the process.

This EP collects the finest tracks, as chosen by Pia Fraus, from their debut release, a limited edition CD-R entitled Wonder What Its Like that was released in 2001.
Listening to Plastilina, it's not surprising at all that these songs hearken back to the band's earliest days, as the tracks are fairly rough and unsteady, only occasionally shining forth hints of the future goodness that would arrive with the band's Clairecords debut, the wonderfully derivative In Solarium.

Deeply indebted to numerous late-80’s indie outfits, Pia Fraus are an unashamedly sepia-tinged delight.
Hailing from Estonia and all under the age of twenty, this six-piece specialise in three-minute rapid blasts of alternative-pop filled with a genuine innocence that is tough to find outside of untapped musical territories such as these.
As with the vastly underrated Weddoes, it would be almost too easy to dismiss these songs as ‘all sounding the same’ but when they are this bittersweet and heartfelt, it’s impossible not to be genuinely affected.
