  Freak show Summary
A freak show is an exhibition of rarities, "freaks of nature" — such as unusually tall or short humans, and people with both male and female secondary sexual characteristics — and performances that are expected to be shocking to the viewers.
Freak shows were popular in the United States from around 1840 to 1940, and were often, but not always, associated with circuses and carnivals.
Freak shows are rare today, often reduced to museum displays containing newspaper clippings, photographs, statues, and other memorabilia of the freak shows of earlier times.

Four Fat Chicks -- Meet the Residents
Based on a 1990 album, Freak Show is really a series of works, some historical, some more along the lines of performance art, and finally some stories embracing the style of underground comix popularized by such comic art hash houses as the Rip Off Press.
Freak Show was performed in 1991 to an invitation-only live audience in San Jose, and this videotaped concert culminated in musician/producer Todd Rundgren editing a live video mix of the performance on stage directly afterwards.
It was also made into a touring show by the Residents in 1995, which featured a full orchestra and singers hired to perform as the circus freak characters found in the game.

Rebeca, Me and the Freak Show
The small travelling shows where each game could be individually owned is being replaced by corporate ventures where the only one who makes any money are the few at the very top who own and control all the rides, games, and eating places.
I don't even KNOW if I should be calling them "disabled." It is a confusing history we have as freaks and geeks, and I was lucky enough to be around the old timers who had traveled in the circuses in the heyday of the freak shows.
She was indeed my sister, and I know people like her and I all have the potential to return to the freak show -- me because of size due to hypothyroid disease and a heart that can't pump fluid effectively, and those like her due to having what most of us see as horrific.

EMAF 96 - Archive: 1994: The Residents Freak Show
Homer Flynn: The Residents interest in freak shows came from two sources: The most immediate inspiration was touring.
The second inspiration was the memory of seeing real freak shows at the Louisiana and Texas State fairs back in the `50s and `60s.
Freak Show was actually adapted from an audio CD and still follows the same basic structure as the compact disc; it is a series of linear events which can be triggered by following interactive paths.

Silverchair : Freak Show - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Silverchair were slaves to their influences on their debut Frogstomp, but on their second album Freak Show, they're beginning to show signs of developing their own style.
While they may still concentrate too heavily on Pearl Jam and Nirvana, they're beginning to fuse the elements together in a more interesting way and are writing stronger hooks.
Freak Show still has its share of mediocre moments, and Daniel Johns should try to sing instead of scream, but the album shows potential that Frogstomp never did.

In contrast to their previous albums, for which songs were written during short breaks between educational and touring commitments, Neon Ballroom is the product of six months spent solely on creating songs around a distinct musical vision.
With producer Nick Launay (Semisonic, Midnight Oil, PiL, Freak Show) as well as some mixes by Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, frogstomp), the band sought to cr eate from a palette of instruments and effects as distinctive as the songs themselves.

Hangface - Freak Show : album review
There's no coyness about showing off here, or about embracing the sillier trappings of dumb rock, as is clear from the wonderfully daft and angst-free cover art.
The second half of the album isn't quite as good as the first, which is a shame, and it's here the problems start to show.
Freak Show sounds fantastic, with strong vocals, great air guitar potential and a huge dash of 90s nostalgia, but they sound so much like the great bands of the past that it's almost hard to distinguish them apart.

 BLOWOFF
Blowoff is a CD single which was included with the hard-cover edition of the Freak Show Comic Book.
The CD's single track is a largely instrumental work based on themes and ideas from the Freak Show album recording sessions.
The name comes from circus slang: a "blowoff" is a separate, deeper part of a freak show which suckers have to pay extra to get into.

We were the ones who had to go back to the hotel after a show and have a hamburger and a Coke while they were out having a good time.
Apparently on Freak Show silverchair has attempted to maintain many of the musical qualities that made their debut so appealing, while purposefully injecting a variety of new and far-more-experimental elements into their basic approach.

DC TALK WELCOME TO THE FREAK SHOW This live album seems to me the pinnacle of live albums- it captures the energy and the new remixes of the songs of DC Talk.
LUV IS A VERB This classic tune is originally off of DCT's Free At Last album, and it's been updated from the hip hop feel of Free At Last to the more current alternative feel of Jesus Freak and Welcome to the Freak Show.
It's on the album before Free At Last, back when they were 100% hip hop- I don't really remember what the original sounds like compared to this one, but the new one is VERY alternative, so I'd imagine that they had to change quite a bit to get it on their live show.

Welcome to the Freak Show combines a lot of dc Talk's greatest hits in a live recording.
My favorite song on this album is "What if I Stumble." Most live albums crank up the volume on the crowd noises and it gets annoying after the first three songs.

KingBathmat - Fantastic Freak Show Carnival : album review
The song Fantastic Freak Show Carnival is really nifty, darting through movements yet sounding so coherently part of something bigger that you begin wondering if you're listening to some long forgotten rock opera by The Who - Tommy 2: Tommy Reloaded.
And with all the work behind it being done by one man, John Bassett, it's an endearing image that is probably quite close to the truth.
However, if it was aspiring towards more of the prog-rock wallowing that the album occasionally drops into, then that failure could definitely be considered a saving grace.

The album opens up with the melodic and stylistically rather progressive Ghost In The Fire, a track close to the sort of stuff The Tea Party did on their first two albums.
This is a rather versatile album, which I feel will be most appreciated by those who like both more alt oriented music as well as progressive.
The melodies are definitely a strong asset of this band's material, joined by a certain joie de vivre that makes this a pretty good album.

In “Fantastic Freak Show Carnival”, King Bathmat has created an (almost) perfect form of escapism.

Welcome to the Freak Show is an excellent live album.
The Jesus Freak sound dominates the show, but they do acknowledge their rap past by including "Luv is a Verb" and "Jesus is Just Alright." Covers/adaptations of "Help" and "It's the End of the World as We Know It" link the show to the larger world of popular music.
For a live recording, the quality of the singing and instruments is very good, but the studio albums would still be a better introduction for the uninitiated.
