 DVD.net : Freaky Friday (2003) (Rental) - DVD Review
Freaky Friday is a remake of the classic Disney film starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, which has successfully been sped up to 2003.
Film artefacts and grain aren’t an issue at all, and the entire film is simply, like the film, a joyous pleasure to watch.
Freaky Friday has really had a freaky time since its mid-2003 release, being an impressive (and unpredicted) box office hit and being able to entertain audiences both young and old alike, as well as sweeping up a Golden Globe nomination.

Freaky Friday (2003) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
The plot is nearly identical to the first film, though the situations have been duly updated for a 21st century audience.
Since the main audience for this film will be young, teenaged girls, it's necessary for the film to trot along at a brisk pace, so as not to lose the short attention span of the typical young viewer.
Though fans of the original film might be rather perturbed that a film less than thirty years old was remade, 2003's Freaky Friday seems to be just as entertaining.

Freaky Friday appears in both an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 and in a fullscreen version on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the widescreen image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
From the “Freaky Jams” menu, highlight the headshot of Curtis and you’ll see 33 seconds of her as she badly mimes a guitar solo.
Friday is definitely enough fun to merit a screening, but the disc itself comes across as a minor disappointment.

 Freaky Friday (2003) DVD Review
Disney's 1977 comedy Freaky Friday (coming to DVD in June) isn't as popular or as old as those other films, but nonetheless, the decision to remake the film did not seem like a bad idea.
Freaky Friday is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, been enhanced for 16x9 televisions.
But as a criticism of the soundtrack (though undoubtedly, this is a complaint with the film's sound mix and not the DVD mastering job), the musical selections were a great deal louder than the rest of the film, and thus were jarring to the viewer.

To get through this 'freaky Friday', Annabel has to fake her way through the wedding plans and deal with her mother's patients, while Tess has to deal with Annabel's wannabe boyfriend who now desires the older woman after he finds how cool she suddenly is.
Freaky Friday (1977) was one of the most enjoyable hits of the heyday of Disney live-action comedies, pairing the great, alas now-forgotten Barbara Harris and a 14 year old Jodie Foster as the mother and daughter.
Most noticeably in the 1977 film, though Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster's mother and daughter argued, Foster's character was a good girl whose conflicts with her mother never strayed beyond the close confines of Disney's appeal to conservative family values.

Freaky Friday (2003): Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Mark Harmon - PopMatters Film Review
Though Freaky Friday doesn't pretend to be original (like the 1977 film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, it is based on the popular book by Mary Rodgers), it also doesn't offer much in the way of new insights into this most peculiar of subgenres.
Director Mark Waters' first film, the weird and energetic comedy The House of Yes (1997), offered what might be called a diametrically opposed view on family structures, that is, families are designed to destroy their offspring.
In Freaky Friday, Tess and Anna learn practical lessons from their switch, perhaps most importantly, that each has her own set of pressures and does her well-intentioned best to cope with one crisis after another.

But the thing about Freaky Friday is that it's actually funny- and that's more than I can say about the other comedies that came out last year.
Of course, Freaky Friday does include many of cliches that mark the young teen films, including very implausible interpersonal relations and a girl with far more musical talent than the theoretical spawn of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Freaky Friday is good family entertainment that won't drain every last drop of your patience, plus it'll just plain make you laugh.

 FREAKY FRIDAY (2003) - DVD
Freaky Friday isn't so much a step down from its predecessor as it is a step sideways, substituting a few new things for a few commensurate old things with some sort of arcane conversion table for pop culture garbage.
For the record, Freaky Friday, while contemporarily the equal of the original, happens to be better than Vice Versa, Like Father, Like Son, and 18 Again.
Disney's 2003 remake of Freaky Friday quite possibly announces that every generation or so, Mary Rodgers' source novel will ripen for adaptation anew, like Jack Finney's Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Freaky Friday is aimed squarely at the "tween" audience, and they will universally enjoy this movie, as will mothers who end up accompanying their offspring to theaters.

While the basic plot outline of "Freaky Friday" is easily predicted, with Anna and Tess discovering how difficult the other person's life is and learning to understand each other, the ways in which it is handled is intelligent and sometimes even surprising.
"Freaky Friday" may be just a family comedy, but director Mark S. Waters has the courage and talent to turn things serious, even while avoiding corny, melodramatic sentimentality.
Aside from the unnecessary feelings that go along with remakes, in general, it is hard to complain about much of anything in "Freaky Friday." The film is fast-paced, its comedy never once drags, and its drama is more subtle and believable than one usually expects from a PG-rated family flick.

It has no sympathy for someone who is born a grasshopper instead of an ant!") says almost all there is to say about the film, while a lingering close-up of Bardem's battered mug in all its injured brute eloquence is, by itself again, enough.
Santa (Bardem) and his ex-longshoremen buddies sit around in a watering hole, comparing notes on the Monday of their discontent, bumming drinks off their one employed pal and sneaking into soccer matches where part of their view is eternally blocked by a stadium overhang.
The film is a missed opportunity, resembling the central theme again as it happens, and while there's a certain poetic symmetry to a lethargic film about lethargy, it doesn't make for a terribly edifying viewing experience.

The success of a film like this hinges on two things: the script and the comic performances of its two leads.
The only dodgy bit of the film is the "weird Asian voodoo" (the fortune cookie comes courtesy of the local Chinese restaurant owner and her crazy mother) that sets the whole thing up.
That minor quibble aside, this is a well scripted, brilliantly acted, thoroughly enjoyable family comedy that deserves to be seen by mothers and daughters everywhere.

 Film Review: Freaky Friday
Catherine Hardwicke's Thirteen contests the heavyweight division and Freaky Friday the lightweight billing.
The real action kicks in when Anna and Tess change lives after eating a magic Chinese cracker, with the result that the teen rebel is transported into the world of a cool clinical shrink, with a well educated WASP vocabulary and accent to match.
If Thirteen carries a heavier punch, Freaky Friday ducks, dives and dances around the ring, grinning and laughing.

Based on the Mary Rodgers novel as well as the 1976 Disney film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, this new version is equally harmless and equally amiable for about the same reasons.
Curtis is also guilty of this, vice versa, for fleeting moments, but she has the experience to smooth it over.

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in Freaky Friday
Always generous and witty, whether beating off Michael Meyers, double-crossing Kevin Kline, or stripping for Arnold, she alleviates, somewhat, the ordeal of watching yet another body-swap comedy (in a fair universe, Rob Schneider's last outing would have been a final blow).
At the same time, Freaky Friday is a kids' movie, and if it does nothing else in the world but provide Jamie Lee Curtis the opportunity to perform a Clipse rap on Jay Leno's show (which she did on 6 August), then it has done all the work it needs to do.
