Fred C. Ashley was born in Spokane in 1899.
Ashley ultimately became one of the leading figures in the appraisal profession and in recognition was elected to senior membership in the American Society of Appraisers and was regional governor from 1964 to 1968.
The Fred C. Ashley papers were donated to Washington State University Libraries in September, 1977 (MS 77-55) by Fred C. Ashley.

The Ashley's often had people in to sing and play the old songs, and it was seldom that work in the neighborhood was not accompanied with singing and picking.
Ashley formed a band with Dwight and Dewey Bell known as "The West Virginia Hotfoots." It was with the band known as "The Blue Ridge Mountain Entertainers", however, that Tom did his first recordings.
Ashley did not record any solo records until he was a member of a group called "Byrd Moore and his Hot Shots." This group consisted of Byrd Moore, finger style banjo or lead guitar; Clarence Greene, fiddle or guitar; and Clarence T. Ashley, guitar or banjo.

Clarence "Tom" Ashley (1895-1967) was a singer, banjoist, guitar player and comedian from Shouns in East Tennessee, but like a lot of first generation country musicians, he worked at a number of other jobs to keep his family fed. He did some sawmilling and some farming.
Ashley made quite a few records, with groups like The Carolina Tar Heels, Byrd Moore and his Hot Shots, The Haywood County Ramblers, the Blue Ridge Entertainers, and under his own name as Ashley and Foster.
Though Ashley was to be rediscovered by the folk revival in the 1960s and would tour and record with the likes of Doc Watson and Fred Price, not enough of his earlier work has been available.

In October 2002, David Ashley White was guest composer at the Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Tom Lee conducting, where the school choir performed three of his works.
In the fall of 2003, White began his fifth year as director of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, TX.
White's essay about his collaboration with the noted English hymn writer, Fred Pratt Green, was published in The Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians under the heading "The Work of Living AAM Composers: Some Personal Reflections," in January 2003.

I know that Fred will do a far better job in reviewing 17-40L against 16-35L and will anxiously wait for his comprehensive review.
I know that these are not fair comparisons since 17-40L is more of an wide angle on 10D.
I wish I could have compared it with 16-35L or even 17-35L, but Luminous Landscape as well as Ashley Cheng on this forum has done a good comparative review on those.
