The short marriage of Fred and Helen Busse was toast, for Fred's roguish behavior which once so beguiled the fair Helen had morphed into loutishness and thuggery.
It was Burlington in 1922 and social support agencies for aggrieved spouses did not exist, so Helen opted to move into The Woodbine rooming house at 215 Maple St. until the divorce was finalized and she could leave the community.
It is impossible to tell what Fred's reaction to his wife's action would have been had he been sober, but the question is moot for Fred was very seldom sober.
