		Fred was known and loved the world over for his ready wit and charm and for holding the distinction of being the only Irishman to win the British Open in 1947 at the age of 36.
		Fred achieved much in his career despite the fact that the bulk of his prime coincided with the second world war.

		Daly was born in Currabubulla, a small town in northern New South Wales, and was educated at Catholic schools, becoming a clerk in the Department of the Navy and an official of the Federated Clerks Union, a stronghold of the Catholic right wing of the labour movement.
		Daly spent the next 23 years as an opposition frontbencher - one of a generation of Labor politicians whose career opportunities were greatly reduced by the splits and internal conflicts of the 1950s and 1960s.
		From 1967 onwards Daly was a strong supporter of Gough Whitlam in his battles with the left wing of the party, and in 1969 Whitlam made him shadow minister for immigration.

		Courtesy of another gutsy display, Claremorris Golf Club won the Connacht final of the Fred Daly Trophy in Ballinasloe last Saturday when completing a comprehensive win against the host club in a second leg packed with drama, excitement, and above all, good golf.
		The premier competition for junior golf in Ireland, Claremorris led 4/1 after the first leg and looked odds on to take the title even allowing for the fact that they had to travel to Ballinasloe’s home course for the second leg.
