  CPN - About CPN
The practical and theoretical collaboration of Emery and Trist over the next several decades resulted in what has become perhaps the most influential approach to work redesign, known as the sociotechnical systems approach, and in the development of a "new paradigm of work" based on principles of democratic participation.
This first came in 1962, when Emery and Trist were invited by Einar Thorsrud of the Technical University in Oslo to participate in the Norwegian Industrial Democracy Project, which developed as a joint labor-management response to pressure within the trade union movement for workers' control.
As Emery and Thorsrud were to demonstrate, worker directors had little impact on the feelings of alienation on the shop floor and, therefore, direct participation ought to be tried as well.

 Emery
Fred's career in the game commenced with Lincoln City, then Bradford City, before a move to Doncaster Rovers, where he took over as manager for four years.
Fred Emery's Carlisle United were uninspiring, and seemed to lack the fire of ambition which burned so fiercely in the supporters hearts.
Fred gave the appearance of being a morose character, but in fact had a pleasing personality.

Fred Saberhagen, in the first book of the Berserker series, introduces us to an unstoppable enemy to whom life itself is irrelevant.
This collection of stories on a common theme predates the Terminator, the Borg and the Matrix by at least 30 years, and presents the idea of man's triumph over machines in a high-energy format which borders on the positive side of the classic pulp magazines.
Emery has consolidated the facts, identified the sources, and presented the alternate views that, within his sense of reason, deserve consideration.

Emery received his undergraduate and law degrees from the U. He began teaching law in 1948 and served as acting dean of the law school from 1961 to 1962.
Emery was a champion of free-speech issues, Flynn said, which was a serious issue during the 1960s while Emery was in the higher echelons of university administration.
While Emery was at the U, roads ran through the middle of campus, and he was "bound and determined" to get rid of them, and keep roads around the campus periphery, Flynn continued.

Industrial democracy experiments by Emery and Thorsrud in Norway between 1969 and 1975, applied the results of experiments by Trist and Bamforth (1951) where the relation between the social system and the technical system of coal mining were studied.
Emerys preferred to take a more limited approach to democracy focusing on participation in the Search Conference, making the participants the experts in the analysis of problems and choices, and limiting democracy to choices on how the work got done (not on policy, investments, and overall strategy).
Fred and Merrelyn Emery (1993), for example, adopt contextualism metaphors as fundamental to any knowledge of organizations and its interactions with an environment that is everywhere turbulent since the 1960s.

In a 1965 article on causal texture, Fred Emery and Eric Trist first used the word turbulent to describe what was then a barely visible emerging environment - the one which we are all so familiar with and live and work in today.
This competitive environment, as Fred Emery noted in the 1977 book, Futures We Are In, and its social values were essentially stable, and industry structures only changed incrementally over time.
Fred Emery, is a pioneer of self management, and democratization of workplace structures and processes.

 Nixon's America
After the outpouring of respect that marked the death of Richard Nixon, Fred Emery's ''Watergate: The Corruption of American Politics and the Fall of Richard Nixon'' is a wrenching reminder of the disgrace in which Nixon resigned the Presidency 20 years ago.
Emery, who served as Washington bureau chief for The Times of London in the 1970's, has written his book in conjunction with a television series on Watergate that will be aired in August on the Discovery Channel.
Emery's retelling will remind readers that Watergate was our most gripping political drama ever, and will persuade many that Nixon and his chief lieutenants appear even more guilty of criminal abuses now than they did in 1974.

Emery has written a devastating indictment of the 37th president and his inner circle that goes a long way toward supporting that disputed Gestapo metaphor.
Emery also draws on some recently released White House tapes and a host of primary sources, all of which greatly enrich his narrative.

Dissatisfied with the way that traditional research methods always look to the past, and with the lack of direct contact between research clients and their audiences, I came up with a new sort-of-research method based on the search conference.
Originally I called it (to acknowledge the Emerys' contribution) a discovery conference, but on finding that label used in medical research in a different context, I changed it to the co-discovery conference, which gives some idea how it works.
