Fred Karlin; award-winning film, television composer; 67 | The San Diego Union-Tribune
Fred Karlin, an eclectic music composer who won an Oscar and an Emmy for his work and counted Benny Goodman among his bosses, has died.
Karlin – born Frederick James Karlin – shared an Academy Award for best song, "For All We Know," which became a top 10 hit for the Carpenters and was featured in the 1970 film "Lovers and Other Strangers."
Karlin, skilled in blues, classical, rock, folk and medieval music, began playing the trumpet and studying jazz in his teens.

Karlin received four Oscar nominations for songs he composed for "The Sterile Cuckoo," "The Baby Maker" and "The Little Ark." His song, "For All We Know," won the 1971 Academy Award after it was featured in the film "Lovers and Other Strangers." The song also became a top 10 hit for the Carpenters.
I had the pleasure of meeting Fred Karlin in 1962 at the Eastman School of Music, where he and Rayburn Wright instituted and taught a unique, Summer course called, "Arrangers' Holiday." It was a two-week course that ran from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
Fred was a talented, dedicated Jazz mujsician and teacher; he gladly shared with us his knowledge of current arranging techniques in many styles and for various groups - some teachers are reluctant and jealous to reveal "the really good stuff." Fred Karlin was an excellent teacher and musician.

FMS: Feature [Composer Fred Karlin Dead at 67]
Karlin received eight other Emmy nominations, including score nods for the miniseries The Awakening Land (1978) and Dadah Is Death (song and score, 1988); the TV-movies Homeward Bound (song and score, 1980), Bridge to Silence (1989); Survive the Savage Sea (1992) and for a song in Jane Pittman.
Karlin's interest in film scoring began with the documentaries and TV commercials he scored during the '60s in New York.
Karlin served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1972 through 1975, and was also on the Boards of the Composers and Lyricists Guild of America (CLGA) and the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL).

Karlin's personal and professional lives collided when he wed Meg Welles in 1963 (he had been serving as musical director for Welles' chamber jazz quintet), and the couple moved to Los Angeles to find film work a few short years after exchanging marriage vows.
Of course, there was no lack of film work in Hollywood for a composer of Karlin's caliber, and in 1967, he kicked off his successful cinematic career with the score to the Robert Mulligan drama Up the Down Staircase.
Karlin's numerous Emmy nominations include such efforts as Minstrel Man, Dadah Is Death, and Survive the Savage Sea.

News - Music from the Movies
Fred Karlin, a prolific composer of music for hundreds of feature films and television productions as well as an author of several acclaimed film music books and a number of articles in Music from the Movies, has died of cancer at the age of 67.
Karlin, who won an Oscar for the song "For All We Know" from Lovers and Other Strangers in 1970, is best known for his score for Michael Chrichton's 1973 sci-fi thriller Westworld and its sequel Futureworld, the 1968 comedy Yours, Mine and Ours and Alan J. Pakula's The Sterile Cuckoo from 1969.
Karlin also wrote several books on film music, including the 'Bible of film scoring', "On the Track" (which he wrote together with Rayburn Wright), and "Listening to Movies".

Fred Karlin is best know for the score to the Michael Crichton thriller Westworld (1970), which people seem to be remaking for no good reason.
Since that film, Karlin has kept extraordinarily busy, scoring over 100 television movies and specials in twenty-five years, including the trash classic, KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978).  I'd like to see Jerry Goldsmith compete with that.
Karlin's work reminds me a lot of Tangerine Dream (a group I have never been a huge fan of) or say an 80's Jackie Chan movie and you could trade their work out without noticing any difference.

Electronic Chronicle: The Fred Karlin Collection Volume 3 - Music from the Movies
These days, Fred Karlin is probably best known as the author of what I consider to be the “film music bible,” ‘On the Track’, and the informative introduction to the genre, ‘Listening to Movies’.
Most of Karlin’s music on this CD showcases interesting sound combinations, but the music is still rooted in tonality and melodic writing, most of it in minor mode.
Stylistically, Karlin makes use of a lot of arpeggio figures, often in the bass registers, in conjunction with sustained synthesizer pads that provide the foundation for the atmosphere in these scores.

1/7/04: CD Reviews Whisper Not Tour de France and Fred Karlin
Instead, this disc features Fred Karlin's multi-layered sound world for a quartet of mid- to-late '80s telefilms, all suspense or action oriented, and not the typical "heart warming true tale of courage and a mother's love" that dominates the plot of most T.V. movies.
Murder C.O.D., with its interpolated trumpet solos (performed by Karlin) carries an air of grittiness and suggests the criminal element often associated with said trumpet.
Karlin uses high quality synthesizers capable of reproducing acoustic orchestral sounds very well, much like Doldinger's Das Boot, and he also seems to be a brilliant engineer and sound designer, creating complex multi-track cues from several electronic sources.

Frederick James Karlin was born on June 16th, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, and played trumpet and studied music composition in his teenage years.
His assignments ran the gamut from the notorious Born Innocent to the sex comedy It Couldn't Happen to a Nicer Guy (with Paul Sorvino as a man raped by a beautiful woman), from the teen romance Forever (in which yours truly was employed as an extra) to the all-star historical miniseries Inside the Third Reich.
Karlin served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1972 through 1975, and taught the ASCAP/Fred Karlin Film Scoring Workshop for a decade as well as teaching at UC Santa Barbara and USC.

 SoundtrackCollector: Fred Karlin's Futureworld OST
I always felt that the music that was previously available for WESTWORLD focused too much on the source music of the movie and so never got the previously available CD.
But with the release of Karlin's FUTUREWORLD and the inclusion of the mentioned 12-minute suite to WESTWORLD (with the inclusion of the gunslinger motif, my fav), the recent release of FUTUREWORLD is a must-own.
I just love the main theme for FUTUREWORLD and the whole piece is an interesting example of Karlin's work: work that needs to be better represented on CD.
