Manrique joined shortstop Ozzie Guillen in 1987 to continue a White Sox tradition of slick, Venezuelan middle infielders begun by Luis Aparicio and Chico Carrasquel.
Manrique had had trials with three other major league teams, and had played for Jim Fregosi in Triple-A Louisville in 1986.
After batting only.237 as the backup to Al Newman, Manrique was released by the Twins.

During his presidential campaign, Texas governor and former Rangers owner George W. Bush called this trade his biggest mistake of his adulthood.
On 29 July 1989, the Rangers acquired infielder Fred Manrique and DH Harold Baines from the White Sox for shortstop Scott Fletcher, future All-Star pitcher Wilson Alvarez and a 20 year old rookie outfielder -- some guy named Sammy Sosa.
Relief pitcher Mitch Williams hit 11 batters in just 98 innings in 1986 -- an average of one plunking per 8.9 innings.

Trade: New York Yankees traded Fred McGriff, Dave Collins, Mike Morgan, and cash to Toronto for Dale Murray and Tom Dodd.
In 1987, Fred McGriff became the Blue Jays starting first baseman, and though he may always be seven dingers away from a Cooperstown plaque, he makes this one memorial.
