The greatest feature of Marriotts pedigrees is that they are packed with superb winning pigeons all the way through, other than when he inbred especially for stock, his wisdom shows there, too, for they certainly kept the family going with more and more winners in their turn.

The attempt ended in disaster however as Marriott crashed at a speed which was claimed to be ‘in excess of 190mph’, but which was more realistically in the region of 140-150mph.
Although injured, Marriott made a full recovery and lived to the age of 83, but never again made an attempt on the Land Speed Record, and steam cars never again challenged to be the fastest cars in the world.
The car that the Stanley’s fielded to defend the Dewar trophy in 1907 was, according to Fred Marriott, essentially the car 1906 car with slight changes to the boiler and brakes.

January 26, Marriott set a World record for one kilometer at 121.6 mph, the first time anyone had exceeded two miles in one minute; two hours later he drove the mile in 28 1/5 seconds, 127.659 mph, a World Land Speed Record.
Marriott’s final attempt to break his own land speed record ended in disaster.

Serpollet's car used an oil-fired 'flash' boiler, which fed steam to a four cylinder enclosed engine which was very advanced and was similar to the conteporary petrol engine design, with poppet valves and an enclosed crankcase.
Fred Marriott regained the Land Speed Record for steam when on 26 January 1906 he attained a speed of 121.57mph over the flying kilometre at Daytona Beach, Florida (he attained the even more impressive speed of 127.65mph over the mile but this record was never ratified).
It took petrol engined cars nearly four years to break Marriott’s record, but if things had been a little different Marriott may have held the record for even longer, for the following year an improved car with a higher boiler pressure and more powerful burners was taken to Daytona to attempt to increase the record.
