Reached on Grand Manan, Saint John Progressive Conservative MP Elsie Wayne said she was pleased that a resolution had been found to the standoff.

The folly of the Mifflin Plan will be seen in July as the sockeye fishery begins on the Skeena River.

Aquaculture research and development efforts at Memorial are being strengthened with a recent injection of $4.5 million into the province's aquaculture sector by the federal and provincial governments.
The aquaculture funding was announced Nov. 14, at the university's Marine Institute, by Premier Brian Tobin and Veterans Affairs Minister Fred Mifflin, who is also the secretary of state for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
Mifflin said government is constantly seeking new and innovative ways to diversify the province's economic base and to bring together government, educational institutions and the private sector to initiate growth and make strategic investments in the economy.

 Mifflin Welcomes Advice on Groundfish Conservation
OTTAWA-Fred Mifflin, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today received the advice of the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) on Atlantic groundfish conservation for 1997.
In some, if not all, of these stocks this will mean that some form of effort controls must be instituted as well as strict monitoring controls.

OTTAWA-Fred Mifflin, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today said he is holding firm on increases to commercial fishing licence fees and changes to licensing policy introduced this year.
Mifflin added that modifications to the fees for future years will be considered, especially in light of the recommendations of a DFO-stakeholder working group.
The group will study the potential of using net income instead of gross as the basis for calculating fees.

MONCTON - Fred Mifflin, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), today announced that 10 Sentinel survey projects are underway in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO Division 4T), off the east coast of New Brunswick, western Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the Gaspé coast and the Îles-de-la-Madeleine in Québec.
These projects are in addition to several other sentinel survey projects already announced in other areas of Québec and the Atlantic Provinces for 1996.
However, Sentinel Surveys should not be misconstrued as test fisheries or as a reopening of currently closed fisheries.

MONS, Belgium (CP) -- George Price, a Canadian soldier killed two minutes before the armistice ended the First World War, was honoured Wednesday by Allied forces before veterans from Canada entered Mons again, 80 years after liberating the city.
Fred Evans, a frail yet alert 101-year-old Canadian veteran, was wheeled into Mons' ornate Grand Place and laid a wreath under a bronze plaque commemorating the day the Canadians arrived -- Nov. 11, 1918.
"It made it even more tragic that Private Price was killed by a sniper at 10:58, two minutes before the armistice," said Fred Mifflin, Canada's minister of veterans affairs.

OTTAWA––Canadian fisheries minister Fred Mifflin on Christmas Eve raised the Atlantic Canadian harp sealing quota to 275,000, up from 250,000 last spring, when 247,000 carcasses were retrieved and thousands more washed up on Newfoundland beaches.
Mifflin left the quota for adult hooded seals at 8,000, as in 1996, with juveniles, or bluebacks, still off limits––but last year sealers actually killed as many as 22,800 bluebacks.
Besides the five species gaining specific protections, hammerhead, sandbar, bull, dusky, lemon, and nurse sharks are also down, National Coalition for Marine Conservation head Ken Hinman recently told Pat Leisner of Associated Press.
