The primary meaning of reed is a plant with a tall strong hollow stem that grows in large groups in shallow water or on marshy ground.
Reed also denotes the stem itself that is used for making the roofs of houses.
A reed is also a thin strip of material which vibrates to make music, often made from the stem of the reed plant.

Did a Plane Hit the Pentagon? by Fred Reed - The Phora
Reed: Now, boys and girls, either Broadcast Dave was planted years in advance by The Conspiracy to mislead the Plastic and Foam Only Club (an entity I grant to be of high priority for penetration by international terrorists) or there was an airplane.
An alternative logical conclusion that could be reasonably drawn from the reporter's claim about the airliner if it is false (assuming that he made such a claim) is that he was threatened by agents of either the US or Israeli governments.
I am only saying that's Reed's essay ought not to convince anyone that the government's 'theory' is true or that the 911 revisionists are irrational or incompetent.

Fred is a refreshingly dangerous philosopher and he gives free speech an intelligent, welcome workout.
In a generally irrational world, Fred is a rare voice of reason (and a funny one at that), which explains why the mainstream media won't touch him with a twenty-foot pole.
As far as Reed being a racist, well, I'll give him this: He doesn't presuppose that all statistical differences between races are the result of oppression or unfortunate circumstances, which is tantamount to racism in our digustingly false, PC age, nor is he embarassed or apologetic that he's white.

Fred Reed's idea was to write a travel narrative of his quest to learn about Said Nursi, an Islamic dissident who still has an active following 50 years after his death.
Reed seems to attribute more to the European powers' and Turkey's ethnic groups' aspirations than to the movement's leaders' hidden nationalistic choices and agendas).
Unfortunately, however, Reed has examined Nursi basically through the eyes of Nurcus, and therefore the portrait he draws of this religios leader is too positive, approaching a hagiography.

Fredericksburg.com - Ah, the whining of Fred Reed--a poor man's Che!
After reading Fred Reed's op-ed ["In Iraq, the officer corps fails us--but the snuffies won't long be fooled," Oct. 7], I was not sure if I should be amused, insulted, or angry.
Reed wrote this based on his own disillusionment with his service as a Vietnam-era Marine, and not on any current information he possesses.
Reed was one of these, then he probably caused dissension in his unit and ran afoul of the command structure.

BOOKSTORE: Political Humor by Fred Reed
Fred, a former Marine, subscribes to no ideology ("an ideology is just a systematic way of misunderstanding the world") but exuberantly wreaks havoc on practically everything, and delights in everything else: the psychotherapy swindle, squalling feminists, race racketeers, damn fool wars, red-light districts in Asia, and tequila fests in Mexico, where he lives.
And answers: "As a young man full of dangerous steroids, your answer will probably be, 'Ah, because her hair is like corn silk under an August moon; her lips are as rubies and her teeth, pearls; and her smile would make a dead man cry.' This amounts to, 'I'm horny,' with elaborations."
