Some allude to Welsh as "the voice of punk", while others lament "he is the poet laureate of the chemical generation" and there's no doubt that those accolades are more than deserving.
From his lurid quill, he breathes life into the damaged souls of victims who have been tainted and even marred by society's grasp on them and chronicles the plight of people who are prisoners of their class, surroundings and physical, emotional and mental flaws.
Brave, disturbing and instinctual, Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy is not just the voice of alienated youth searching for answers or the serving of justice to those usually beyond reach, it is a tome and tribute to the most fragile and tenuous of all gifts that mankind reveres and demands.
